The world of photography is constantly changing. With new technologies and techniques emerging regularly, you need to make sure you don’t fall behind on the latest trends. Here are some tips to help you stay on top of latest photography trends.
1. Read Photography Blogs
Keeping tabs on some of the top photography blogs can help you stay up to date with the industry. You can even leave comments on your favorite posts to spark conversation and interact with other photographers. Some blogs give you tips and tutorials, others offer image-based inspiration, and some do a little of both. Reading a wide array of blogs will help provide insight into the latest ideas and advice. A few great blogs to follow include Photofocus.com, ExpertPhotography.com and DIYPhotography.net.
2. Join Professional Organizations
Joining a professional photography organization has a multitude of benefits. Not only will it help you form relationships with some other photographers in your area, but it will also provide you with the opportunity to attend events sponsored by the organization. Many of these clubs also send out periodic newsletters that touch on the latest photography trends, and they share tips and advice. Additionally, listing professional organizations on your resume looks good to prospective employers or clients.
3. Attend Conferences
As a member of a photography organization, you could be invited to attend professional conferences. These events allow you to hear the latest news, tips and advice from top industry professionals. It also gives you the opportunity to network with other photographers. Challenge yourself to talk with the other attendees and keynote speakers. Networking at these events can really open up doors for you in the future.
4. Follow Industry Leaders on Twitter
You wouldn’t expect Twitter to offer some of the greatest nuggets of knowledge for an aspiring photographer, but it does. Twitter is an amazing platform where you can find instantaneous thoughts and tips from top industry leaders. Follow these pros for input on their current projects and the techniques they use.
5. Browse Flickr for Inspiration
Looking at the work of your peers allows you to gain inspiration and stay current as a photographer. Every picture can teach you something about photography, even if it’s what not to do. Browse Flickr and similar image curation sites for lots of examples of digital photography. Store the ones you like in a folder on your computer for later inspiration.
It isn’t hard to stay up to date on the latest industry trends. As a photographer, learning never ends. The best photographers constantly learn, grow and fine-tune their knowledge of the craft.
