For more than a century, the ecological give-and-take on the Channel Islands among plants, animals and their environments was mainly “take.” Grazing animals removed plants, the topsoil eroded away, springs dried up and alien plants invaded these new open spaces. Recently, the main stressors – the grazing animals – were removed and scientists at the national park service have begun working to restore and rebalance the original ecologies. The rare plants on the islands tell the story – some are rebounding on their own, while others – unable to cope with an unbalanced system – need our intervention to reverse the effects. This photographic exhibit looks at the balancing act between the two.
The exhibit runs through January 7, 2013.
