Visual Journalism Classes

Visual Journalism courses that offer practical career training

The mission of Brooks' Bachelor of Science in Visual Journalism degree program is to offer a forward looking college-level Visual Journalism program using contemporary equipment, techniques and processes, grounded in the journalistic traditions of truthful storytelling and ethical behavior.

Our California Visual Journalism classes are taught in classrooms and labs that give our students real-life experiences. They learn on industry-current equipment that many of today’s professional photographers use. And when they graduate, our students can be prepared to pursue new opportunities with the practical photography experience and valuable portfolio pieces that employers are looking for. Here are just a few of the specialty Visual Journalism classes available to students at Brooks Institute:

The Picture Story

This Visual Journalism course allows students an opportunity to work in depth on several projects during the session. The approach will be that of the classic photojournalism picture story which usually focuses on one individual and tells his/her story at length. Part of the emphasis in the class will be stories of social relevance, i.e., stories that have a chance to make a difference if they are published in print form or are made available to a wider audience via some other publication form such as the World Wide Web.

Documentary

One of two Visual Journalism courses designed to allow the student, while still in school, to experience a documentary assignment much like the one they would receive from a professional editor. The class is structured so the majority of the time is spent off-campus shooting documentary photographs in the United States or abroad.

Real World Photojournalism

This interactive, all-digital Visual Journalism class is designed to help prepare the student for the working world of photojournalism. Students are required to transmit their assignments to the teacher (as photo editor) on deadline as they would working for any newspaper or magazine today. Students also learn about the factors and problems photojournalists face after graduation.

Digital Video

The Visual Journalism course is designed to take the photojournalist into the world of Video Journalism. Transferring photo skills into video, simple storytelling and editing for video journalists are taught. The course also covers what other factors and problems video journalists must deal with whether working on a local paper’s web page or shooting for the broadcast world.
