BROOKS’ FACULTY, STUDENTS, AND ALUMNI EARN TOP SANTA BARBARA, Calif. – January 9, 2008 – Brooks Institute’s faculty, staff, and alumni were recipients of four top awards from the 2008 Photo Imaging Education Association (PIEA) International Student-Teacher Photo Competition and Exhibition in Jackson, Michigan held December 2007. Brooks student, Adam Rose, received the Grand Prize in the College/University-Portfolio category for his image: "Image #5, #6 – Close-up of woman, girl against blue wall." Brooks faculty member, Bruce Burkhardt, received Honorable Mention in the Faculty-Single Image category for his image: "Amish girl." Brooks alumnus and Harrington College of Design Department Chair, Dirk Fletcher, received the Grand Prize in the Faculty – Portfolio category for his image: "Asian girl with bowl, incense burning." Brooks alumnus and general faculty member, Kevin Osborn, received Second Prize in the Faculty - Portfolio category for his image "Butterfly wing, fly." All images listed will be exhibited at the Photo Marketing Association’s 2008 tradeshow in Las Vegas January 2 through February X, 2008. This year, Brooks was among 115 schools competing. The competition and exhibition has more than 80 sponsors, and distributes more than $159,733 in prizes. Judging the competition were Barbara Bridgers-Johnson, general manager for Imaging and Photography at The Metropolitan Museum of Art, Roy Flukinger, present research curator of photography and former senior curator of photography and film of the Harry Ransom Humanities Research Center at The University of Texas at Austin, and Rich Clarkson, director of photography and senior assistant editor of the National Geographic Society, assistant managing editor of The Denver Post, director of photography of The Topeka (Ks.) Capital-Journal and contract/contributing photographer for 20 years to Sports Illustrated and whose been named one of the 50 most influential individuals in American photography by American Photo Magazine.
