EAST MEETS WEST AT BROOKS INSTITUTE'S GALLERY 27 SANTA BARBARA, Calif. – (Sept. 16, 2008) –Gallery 27 joins East/West Gallery to bring the extraordinary work of Horace Bristol to downtown Santa Barbara with Bristol:100. The exhibit celebrates the 100-year anniversary of Horace Bristol, a photojournalist and chronicler of the 20th Century. A 2nd exhibit is opening simultaneously as second-generation. California native, Greg Voight displays images from his sabbatical journey in which he spent 33 days observing life in New England. Both open on October 20, 2008 and run through December 1, 2008 at Brooks Institute's Gallery 27, located at 27 East Cota Street in Santa Barbara. An artist's reception for both exhibits will be held on November 6th from 5:00 – 8:00 p.m. with Henri Bristol on-hand to speak for his father's work. The life of Horace Bristol (1908 – 1997) is one of phenomenal vision and severe tragedy. He began his photographic career as a contributing photographer for LIFE magazine in June of 1937 and made the cover only two months later. Shortly after this, Bristol partnered with John Steinbeck and documented California's migrant farm worker population during the winter of 1938. This journey was the inspiration for Steinbeck's novel, "The Grapes of Wrath." Bristol continued his documentary work through World War II and was a frequent contributor to LIFE magazine. After the war, Bristol relocated to Japan and established the East-West Photo Agency through which he sold his photographs of Southeast Asia to magazines throughout Europe and the United States. His life took a turn in 1956 with the suicide of his wife. In his despair, Bristol burned much of his work and locked the rest away for almost 30 years. After reconsidering his work later in life, Bristol lived to see it put on display in galleries and museums throughout the United States and Europe, and Brooks Institute's Gallery 27 will have on display some of his rare color images. Presenting both color and black and white panoramic and traditional images in his exhibit entitled, "33 Days in New England," photographer, Greg Voight will be on-hand to share his experience as a Californian in New England. Voight is an accomplished photographer and has been on the faculty at Brooks Institute since 2000. He has taught eight different classes at Brooks Institute, ranging from Photo 101 to Photo 413 and has managed a thriving commercial photography career. Voight took the opportunity to go on sabbatical in 2006. "After years of being a commercial photographer, this project was an opportunity to return to an observational direction in my work," said Voight. Explore his view of New England and enjoy fantastic New England fare at the artist's reception. About Brooks Institute |
