BEHIND PHOTOGRAPHS EXHIBIT COMES TO BROOKS INSTITUTE’S GALLERY 27
Photographer and Brooks Institute Alumnus Tim Mantoani unveils his latest work

SANTA BARBARA, Calif. – (June 22, 2009) – Photographer and Brooks Institute alumnus Tim Mantoani brings images from his exhibit Behind Photographs: Archiving Photographic Legends to Brooks Institute’s Gallery 27. Behind Photographs is a testament to the talented men and women who have captured some of the most recognized photographic images of our time. Some noted photographers’ portraits appearing in this collection are: Harry Benson, Mary Ellen Mark, Nick Ut, and Jeff Widener. The images will be on display for a limited time from August 6 – 28 and September 7 – 25, 2009 with an artist reception on August 6, 2009 from 5–8 p.m.

As they are presented, many of these gifted individuals remain anonymous, with only a tiny testament for their iconic photo listed below their published photographs, in six point type. This project is dedicated to the talents who have forged innovative and inspirational ground over the past decades and the images that they have selflessly provided to all of us for generations to come. This project is ongoing and will continue until supplies are no longer available.

"In December of 2006, I decided to capture historic photographers and their images in one 20"x24" print. Utilizing a 20x24 Polaroid Camera – a rare and mammoth view camera that is not easily transported from one place to another, I have documented more than 100 photographers and will continue fueling this project with the intent to archive an artistic medium challenged by technological advance and a shrinking financial support," said Mantoani, "There is much work to be done, as the supplies to fuel this unique camera are no longer in production."

Tim Mantoani graduated from Brooks Institute in 1991 and was awarded an Honorary Master of Science in Photography degree in 1996. His area of specialization was advertising photography. Mantoani’s credits include Sports Illustrated, Newsweek and ESPN The Magazine, as well as campaigns for Coca-Cola, EA Sports and Coors Brewing Company.
