BROOKS INSTITUTE EXHIBITS SETLIST: MUSIC PORTRAITURE BY TODD ROETH VENTURA, Calif. – (May 24, 2010) – Brooks Institute is proud to present Setlist: Music Portraiture by Todd Roeth. This exhibit premieres with an artist reception on Thursday, June 10, 2010, from 5:00 -7:30 p.m. at the Visions Gallery in the Marriott Ventura Beach and will be on view from June 10 – August 7. Setlist is a collection of imagery that captures bands, singers, songwriters and musicians away from the stage. Roeth's work reveals the artist as an individual, beyond the performance and away from the spotlight. Bring your smart phone to add an auditory quality to this exhibit as each portrait is accompanied by a link to a song by the musician. "A photograph by Todd Roeth is instantly recognizable among a growing number of music fans in the Denver area and beyond. From capturing local Colorado luminaries like Nathaniel Rateliff and Gregory Alan Isakov, to photo shoots with nationally known artists like Mason Jennings and The Handsome Furs, Roeth intuitively uses the camera as an unflinching eye to penetrate the veneer between the music fan and the musicians themselves," said Heather Browne of the Fuel/Friends Music Blog. "He'll note the way an artist fingers the brim of their felt hat and incorporate that into the shot, or see the fleeting glance that crosses their face when I'm asking an interview question about something they love, and capture that vulnerability in a photograph. He sees things that most of us don't.." Often classified as Indie Rock, Roeth recognizes and captures the genuine passion of these musicians to create their art as they see fit in the best, and often the only way they know how. These artists often perform without promise of financial gain, sense of stability or existence in a comfortable lifestyle. These images are Roeth's way of paying reverence to that authenticity alone, despite or before any success or fame that has or may come to any of them. "Our experiences with these people typically occur within a very narrow and myopic context. We see and understand them as they are for a few hours on a dark stage or invisibly through earbuds on our iPods. When the show is done and the lights come on, our lives – and theirs – go on," said Roeth, "I have fostered a growing desire to meet these people, to turn over their stones, and discover for myself that these artists, makers of something special, are also regular people, who live and drive and eat – even on weekends." Todd Roeth is a storyteller, who prefers to do so around a campfire among friends with guitars, but most often speaks for himself and others via graphic design and photography. He received his undergraduate and Masters of Arts degree in Visual Communications from Ohio University in Athens, Ohio. He is an avid music fan and has worked in creative departments in the publishing software industry, MTV Networks and is a founder and creative director of Gigbot, a music marketing and ticketing company. Roeth has also taught graphic design and multimedia design at Brooks Institute and at the School of Fine Art at Marietta College. The Marriott Ventura Beach is located at 2055 East Harbor Blvd. in Ventura. This is a free exhibit and open to all ages. Refreshments and parking are complimentary and provided by the Marriott during the artists reception on June 10. About Brooks Institute |
