Joe Gosen earned his AA in Liberal Arts from Ohlone College in 1986, a BA in Photojournalism in 1988 from San Jose State University, and his MA in Journalism in 2000 from the University of Nevada, Reno. Joe joined the Visual Journalism full-time faculty at Brooks Institute in 2001 after more than a decade of working as a photojournalist and graphic artist at newspapers in California, Florida and Nevada.

At Brooks Institute, Gosen coaches students in finding the most effective platform for telling their stories. In addition to photography and editing, Gosen teaches across the Visual Journalism curriculum, including writing, audio, video, Web production, social networking and publication design - all essential skills he has honed over the years to help students succeed in today’s multimedia climate.

Gosen has also led three international documentary projects for the school – to Argentina in 2005, to China in 2006 and Ireland in 2007. In 2008, Brooks Institute named him faculty member of the year. Outside of teaching, Gosen shoots for editorial clients such as the San Francisco Chronicle, and he works on Web-based projects for individuals and small companies. In addition, Gosen is a founding partner of, an online resource for photojournalists and sports photographers.
