BS Visual Journalism

Paul Myers earned his BA in Cultural Anthropology from University of California, Santa Cruz in 2001 and his MA in Religious Studies from University of California, Santa Barbara in 2005. Paul is a multimedia journalist and educator who has been teaching at Brooks Institute since 2003.

Currently, Myers teaches across the Visual Journalism curriculum at Brooks, including classes in nonfiction visual storytelling with multimedia and the annual international documentary project. Before joining Brooks Institute, Myers worked for a variety of newspapers and magazines, including the Appeal Democrat in Marysville, Calif., and the Journal Standard in Freeport, Il.

He also worked extensively with El Andar, a California-based bilingual magazine that covered cultural events and news issues concerning the Latino Community in the United States and Latin America. Myers was the 2010 Video Fellow at USA Today, the 2009 Photojournalism Fellow at the San Jose Mercury News and in 2009 served as a multimedia producer at the Eddie Adams “Barnstorm” Workshop in upstate New York. He has won the New California Media Award for Photography three years in a row (2000-2003) for documentary photography about refugees in Chiapas, Mexico; the poverty of the colonias of Southern Texas; and the exhumation of massacre sites in Guatemala.

At Brooks Institute, Myers founded the VJ Multimedia Workshop in 2009, a tuition-free seminar for 25 laid-off photojournalists and 25 visual journalism students. More than 30 industry professionals contributed their time, pro bono, as team leaders and guest speakers for the three-day workshop.
